Amar Shonar Bangla

Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban

Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban

Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban (Bengali:
The Jatiya Shangshad at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka is the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, is a wonder of modern architecture and technology. It is one of the largest and most spectacular Parliament buildings in the world. Originally designed by the famous American architect Louis I. Kahn, this 155ft high 9-storey building is surrounded by an artificial lake called the Crescent Lake. The main section is hidden behind a strong outer covering with circular and triangular openings. The structure has 1605 doors, 335 windows, 365 ventilators and corridors totaling to a bewildering length of 41.6 kilometers. But for the help of a guide, one could easily get lost in these deceptive corridors. The house has also 354 seats for MPs, 56 for guests, 40 for journalists and 430 for spectators. It has also three party rooms each of which can seat 153 people. The whole place is air conditioned and includes all modern amenities. Although construction work on this structure started in 1964, it was finally inaugurated in 1982 and the first parliamentary session was held on 15 February the same year. Being a highly complex structure, its annual maintenance cost is about 50 millions taka. This is really a wonder for Bangladesh.

Shat Gombuj Mosque(Sixty Tomb Mosque)

Shat Gombuj Mosque
The Sixty Dome Mosque (Bengali: ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ Shaṭ Gombuj Moshjid) (more commonly known as Shait Gambuj Mosque or Saith Gunbad Masjid) in Bagerhat, Bangladesh might qualify as one of more remote and foreigner-free UNESCO sites we’ve come across in our travels, it’s certainly not a lonely place.

From the moment we stepped foot on the grounds of this 15th century pre-Mughal-era mosque, we were approached by playful school girls, elderly Imams, extended families, shutter-happy teenagers and everyone in between. Conversations went in and out of Bangla and English about Bangladesh, United States, Islam, crocodiles, cricket, Facebook and more. At every turn, mobile phones clicked with photos of us.

And although the grounds of the mosque teem with people and activity, the interior is a peaceful array of columns and domes (77 in total plus four at the corners, just to confuse the visitor hoping to count 60). See for yourself in the panorama below.
