The government has undertaken a plan to make 8,500 rural post offices e-centers and equip them with computers, printer, internet-modem, digital camera, photo printer, mobile phone set and generator. Post Telecommunications Minister Raziuddin Ahmed Razu told this in the parliament today in reply to a question from Monjur Qader Quoreshi.
The minister said a project for upgrading the rural post offices is now waiting for final approval of the Executive Committee on National Economic Council (ECNEC). All existing post offices would be converted into a two-room building to set up the e-centers, he said adding construction of the building would start soon after approval of the project.
The minister said the rural post offices would be reactivated again after launching the e-centers, which would be the focal point of all electronic service to the grassroots people. He said the government has no plan to make the card phone centers operational again as the tenure of the card phone management centers was expired in 2009 and the card phone booths across the country are now out of order.
The minister also said the government at present has no plan for a complete privatization of the telecommunication sector as the public sector organizations are providing services to the people in a competitive manner with private sector organizations. -BSS

Digital Innovation Fair 2011- Bangladesh
A three-day "Digital Innovation Fair-2011" began at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novotheatre in the capital city on July 6. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the fair jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology, Access to Information Programme (A2I) under Prime Minister's Office and Divisional Commissioners' Office of Dhaka.
A total of 80 institutions under different ministries and departments and six others private organizations have been displaying their services in the fair. At least 31 institutions would be given "Digital Innovation Fair-2011 Award" at the second day of the fair tomorrow. Besides, three seminars on various subjects would be held at the fair premises during the three day fair.
"Despite economic and skilled manpower limitations, we have to remove corruption and misrule through ensuring best use of technology for building a people-oriented government system," she said.
Mentioning her government's firm desire to reach different services to the people without any hassle, Sheikh Hasina said those who are working in public administration and giving leadership in service sector have to "think afresh and bringing changes to their mentalities" as her government is committed to bring service to the doorsteps of people.
"We want to make sure that people will not come to get government service, rather service will go to their doorsteps. We have to innovate how and in what way we can ensure service for the maximum population of the country, she said.

Digital ID card in Rajshahi University
Rajshahi University authority will introduce digital identity card for its teachers, students and employees on July 2, reports BSS.
Public Relation office of the university told BSS that the State Minister for Science and Information Communication and Technology Architect Yeafesh Osman will inaugurate the ceremony to be held in this connection at the university Senate building on the day at 11am.

Vice- Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan will preside over the function and Pro-VC Prof Muhammad Nurullah and Treasurer Prof Abdur Rahman will speak. The state Minister will formally hand over ID card to the Vice-Chancellor. Earlier, on October 19, 2009, university authority started procedure for introducing digital ID card.
