Fire service officials said six hillside shanties were buried when a huge chunk of earth and a retaining wall collapsed around 7 am, leaving the three dead and many others trapped.
Officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station Abu Jafar Mohammad Omar Faruque said a rescue operation was on to recover the people still remained trapped.
The deceased were identified as 'Amzad', 38, Razia Begum, 27, and Sharmin, 10, 'Azad', 10, and 'Sharmin', 17, Rehana Begum, 32, her daughters 'Fatema', 9, and 'Tanjina', 2, said officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station Abu Jafar Mohammad Omar Faruque.

Fire service and local people searching for more
Senior station officer of Agrabad Fire Service Farid Ahmed Chowdhury said rains were hampering the rescue operation. He said the landslide took place due to incessant rains in the city for the last few days. The police had been asking the people living in vulnerable areas to move to safer places, but they did not pay heed to it, OC Faruque said.
Witnesses said the incident happened just few hours after the city mayor visited and asked the people to take shelter in a nearby school as living in the slums on hill slopes were risky. They blamed real estate companies for unregulated cutting of the hills, harming the environment and increasing the risk of landslides.
