Twelve mostly Islamist political parties have called a 30-hour countrywide general strike from July 10 to protest removal of ‘Absolute Faith and Trust in Allah’ from the constitution.

A senior leader of Khelfat-e-Majlish, Abdur Rob Yusufi, declared the lockdown at a news conference at its central office in Naya Paltan on Thursday noon.

Earlier in the day, parliament passed the 15th constitution amendment bill into law, scrapping the caretaker government system, but retained Bismillah and Islam as state religion, alongside some other basic changes.

The other parties are Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB), Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon, Sammilito Olama Mashayekh Parishad, National Democratic Party, Islami Oikya Andolon, Bangladesh Muslim League, Bangladesh NAP, NAP Bhasani, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party, Islamic Party and Nezame Islami Party.

They also demand a halt to implementation of the national education and women’s development policies.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina in her speech said that some were claiming that the name of Almighty Allah was removed from the constitution. “I don’t know why they are saying so. The name of Allah and provision of ‘Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim’ (in the name of Almighty Allah) have not been removed.”

Abdur Rob Yusufi said that most of the activities of the ruling Awami League were against Islam. “They want to destroy the faith of the people by removing the words ‘Absolute Faith and Trust in Allah’.”

He said that the hartal had been called to protest the government move to reinstate secularism and socialism (two of the four basic principals of the original 1972 Constitution).

Khalilur Rahman Madani, joint secretary of Sammilito Olama Mashayekh Parishad, told reporters, “The government is trying to uproot the Islam religion from the country. As part of its attempt, the provision of establishing absolute faith and trust in Allah has been removed.”

Of the other parties, Islami Andolon Bangladesh, led by Peer Chormonai, on Wednesday called a daylong general strike on July 10 over the same issues.
