Election commission (EC) has undertaken a plan to provide the citizens Smart Card, containing all information of a voter replace the existing voter ID card by 2014. The commission, in view of this, has prepared the proposal of a project title "Identification System for Enhancing Access to the Services Idea", which is now waiting for approval of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
Election commissioner Muhamamd Sahul Hussain told BSS that the Taka 19 crore project is expected to be approved by the ECNEC this month and the project would be implemented with the credit facilities from the World Bank. The Smart Card, which would be like ATM card of bank, is expected to reach to the voters before 2014 general election, Sahul Hussain said.
Sources in the EC said the Smart Card would contain name,date of birth, place of birth, present and permanent address, birth registration number, blood group, names of the parents and their ID number with other information of a voter.
The sources said some companies from Japan, China, India, South Korea and USA have submitted proposal to make the Smart Card. But most of the proposals do not suit to the requirement of the commission.
The commission have already talked to some local experts and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to come to a decision on the matter, an official of the EC said adding that the commission also considering giving the task to the security printing press.
Professor Lutful Kabir of BUET said the Smart Card can be produced in the country. He said the Bangladeshi nationals who are going abroad with job, are being given Smart Card made by BUET.
"So far we received no complain about the Smart Cards," he told saying that "it proves that the BUET made cards are of high quality".
