Bangladesh has decided to accord formal recognition to the newly-born state of Republic of South Sudan.
"The independence of South Sudan on July 9 is the manifestation of the long-cherished aspirations of the people of South Sudan for self-determination," said a press statement of the foreign ministry.
Bangladesh was among the co-sponsors of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution that admitted the republic into the United Nations as its newest member on July 14.
"Bangladesh wishes the government and the people of the new republic a peaceful and prosperous future," the statement read.
It further said that the country pledges to support the republic in its journey towards consolidation of democracy, sustainable development and equitable social justice.
Bangladesh contingent of peacekeepers comprising over 1,500 troops played an important and constructive role under the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) in implementing a comprehensive peace agreement signed in January 2005 that led to the full independence of the South Sudan.
